History

The Lincoln Kiwanis Club – Cornhusker received its charter on March 13th, 1963. 

The club began with 30 charter members. Club membership continues at over 50 members.

One of the club’s early projects was to place one registered-bred gilt (Pig) with a farm boy or girl.  The recipient would keep most of the litter, returning a bred gilt to the club to be passed on to another farm for breeding thereby enhancing the farm productions.

Other projects have included giving students scholarships for tuition for the Nebraska Vocational Technical School at Milford, Nebraska (now Southeast Community College). The club has sponsored an annual fishing day for the Lancaster office of Mental Retardation, participated in Adopt-a-Highway litter campaign, supported Babe Ruth Baseball, and sponsored Bike Rodeos that instill awareness of bike safety. The club purchased and helped plant pine trees in Pioneers Park in 1989.  The club raised over $36,000 for the Kiwanis International Worldwide Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) project to combat a leading preventable cause of mental retardation. The millions of dollars raised by this Kiwanis International project were distributed through the U.S. Fund for UNICEF.

In more recent years, the Cornhusker Kiwanis has helped and continues to support a Farm/City Breakfast, Nebraska Legislative Day, Special Olympics, Meals on Wheels, the LPS/Food Bank Back Pack project, St. Monica’s (a program for women recovering from drug addiction), Teddy Bear Cottage (Health & Human Services project of distribution of products for young mothers), Obasi Kid Trek (a local young people’s mission project), Peoples City Mission, KFOR Operation Santa Claus, Trago Spray Park, and Community Blood Bank.

Currently, the club sponsors Key Clubs of high school students in Lincoln Southeast High, and Lincoln Southwest High schools. Scott Middle School hosts a Builders Club for youth of middle school age and grade school youth participate in K-Kids at Adams and Holmes Grade Schools.
